“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”~ II Corinthians 1:3-4 NKJV
I read a book a while ago called the God of all comfort by Hannah Smith. From the book, it became quite clear to me that, Nothing happens to a child of God that God has not allowed.
If the situation happens to me, then my father in heaven has permitted it for my good and the good of other people around me.
I am not to accept every “negative” situation as if they are from my father. I am to reject what I know are not from Him with great confidence that it will end well.
There is this great sense of peace within my heart that my Father in heaven cannot fail me.
God is the God of all Comfort! That means God comforts us in ways we cannot explain. I have experienced the unexplainable comfort of God a few times in my life and 3 months ago while I was having a stroke, He was there again.
I experience the God of all comfort daily. God is there to stand with us even in our day to day challenges. You have this inner joy and confidence that the challenge you are facing is just for a while.
God comforts us by His Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit is our comforter. We need comfort moment by moment because this world is full of challenges. However, with the presence of the Holy Spirit, we are equipped to overcome the daily challenges.
Today I would like to remind us of the truth that God is love!
He cannot be otherwise but love! Now we get this from scriptures. I am not going to try to prove the validity of scripture today. Let us take it that what scripture says is true.
Therefore what we need to do today is to try to bring to the heart and mind the true nature of God.
The question I will try to answer today is why do bad things happen to good people?
I have had this question for a long time and God has answered it to me from scripture. The answer is that our Father in heaven is Love! Anything He does is good!
Therefore what we call bad things, are not from God! However, He allows these things because He knows that what we are better with these bad things than without them!
I know as pastors sometimes we paint the wrong picture by always sharing details of the good things about our testimonies without telling the other side.
I have found that every human on earth goes through tough times! There are enough troubles on earth for everyone.
There are all sorts of challenges that people are facing daily. Some are facing financial difficulties, some health, some emotional, some spiritual, some religious and some political.
Sometimes things work out very well but sooner or later there will be a challenge.
These challenges come regardless of your faith! They come as a result of our fall as the human race.
Sin on earth has an effect on the whole inhabitants of the earth. If only you and I can be objective and look back, the actions of our ancestors will continue to affect us for many years!
If we are on a ship and one of us mistakenly shoots a hole into the ship, we will all feel the impact of that mistake!
So we must all go through challenges on the earth.
We also have an enemy going to and fro seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8).
His activities on the earth with those who yield to him continue to cause challenges on earth for everyone both believers and non-believers.
Take note that believers and non-believers are all God’s precious creatures and are very important to Him.
God doesn’t want evil for anyone. So when trouble comes, it is God who we need to trust to get us out.
Our blessing as believers is our access to God’s love, wisdom and power.
God uses trials and temptations to perfect us.
So we see that God is not the source and cannot be the source of evil.
However God refrains from suspending the rules of nature because He knows that should the trials be allowed to hit us, we have already been prepared such that as He walks us through these challenges we would come out better than we went in.
Should we then pray for trials?
Of course not! Troubles must come whether you ask for them or not.
So we must rather pray to always be on the path that He has made for us.
On the path that God has made for us, before any trial comes, God has already prepared us. We do not need to pray for trials! We can trust our Heavenly Father to turn every trial into a blessing.
Let me remind us that our Heavenly Father loves us so much!
He loves us as much as He loves Jesus. We can rest on the truth that we are children of God!
We must come with boldness to the throne of grace and receive mercy and grace for the time of need.
I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. (John 17:23 NKJV)
How do we prepare for the day of trials?
The preparation for the day of trials is in two parts!
God has His part and we have our part. Our part is to trust God to prepare us by making us into victorious children of His.
God’s part is to do all that needs to be done! He leads us! We simply obey!
So we must learn to hear Him! We must also desire to be like Christ . It is not possible to be transformed into the image of Christ if we have no desire to be like Him.
The Lord has given us free will so the beginning of God’s work on us is to make us desire to be like Jesus.
Do you desire to be like Jesus?
Are you willing to obey every instruction you find in the word of God for you? Are you seeking to know His will for your life? Have you tried to obey God and live a righteous life? If you have, you must have discovered that you will always fail in your effort.
The desire is important. The failure is also important. The surrender to Jesus is also important. We must learn to trust God to work in us and through us.
Do not make up a list of activities for yourself!
Rather determine to yield to every leading of the Lord. Do not look for excuses for your disobedience. Confess them and trust God to help you overcome them.
How do you measure progress?
What is progress in the kingdom? Surely it is not in the material things we have.
It is not whether we have troubles or not. It is not even how moral we are or not. It is how much we are like Christ!
In kingdom language- how little of us is left. You know you are growing if your desires for life is to be with Him and be more useful for Him.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV)
Dear father in heaven, you are the God of all comfort. I have experienced your comfort this past 3 months. Thank you for being my comforter and using this time of recovery from a stroke to bless me and the people around me.
Lord, I continue to trust you and I come today again to receive fresh grace and mercy for today!
I pray in Jesus Name.
