It’s not what you look at that matters! it’s what you see.

It’s not what you look at that matters! it’s what you see.

Henry David Thoreau

What do you see? Do you see trouble? Other people see opportunity! Do you see people who don’t like you? Others are seeing people who can challenge them and keep them accountable! Do you see a giant who cannot be defeated? Others see a giant who is too big to miss. Wisdom is what makes us see what most people would not see. Looking at the right stuff is not enough! Attending the right seminars is not enough! What do you see? This is really where wisdom come into the picture.

Here is a TED talk by Juwon Melvin. In it he shares how he looked on the streets of Morocco and instead of seeing just poor children begging for food. He saw an opportunity to make a difference. When he started his business to help these children he had a major setback but instead of seeing failure he saw another way of doing things. Today things are working much better and he is making a difference!

What are you seeing? Wherever you are you can see either an opportunity or a problem. You may see a limitation or challenge. Choose to see what wise people see. Begin by choosing to see a positive attribute in the people around you. As you look around you today, try to make a note of opportunities of making a difference. Soon, it will become natural for you to see opportunities where others see obstacles. Really, its not what you look at that matters, its what you see.

  1. How come I have missed this so far? Thanks Dems for a short and sweet word of wisdom! I love it.

  2. You are right Ade, Theodore Roosevelt said ” “Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” What you see has a lot to do with where you get to.
If you see life as beautiful see more beauty around you and if you see life as hard you tent to attract more of that.
I believe that you owe it to yourself to clear your vision on a daily basis in order to see clearly.

    1. Thanks Olu! I agree that we usually see more of what we want to see and are blinded to the things we don’t expect to see. I’m always tickled by the way I start seeing the model of cars that my friends have even though it seemed that I had never seen them before!

  3. In the midst of discouragements, make efforts to lift yourself up. Most people are concern about their own well being. In order words, you are responsible for your level of joy!

  4. If you see your food, family, work… in an exciting way, others will start seeing the same with you. Today is time to start enjoying your life.
