How to develop your vision – It is a terrible thing to see and have no vision

It is a terrible thing to see and have no vision - Helen Keller

Who is Helen Keller?

Born in 1880, she was a deaf-blind american who despite her disabilities went on to become a prominent author, political activist and lecturer. She was the first deaf-blind person to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree! You can imagine all the obstacles she overcame to achieve these feats. So when she says that it is a terrible thing to see and have no vision, she knows what she is saying. Read her biography here – The Story of my Life  . You can also watch a YouTube video about her childhood – The Miracle Worker!

What’s your vision?

What do you see in your future? In what direction is your life headed? If you take some specific steps today and consistently in the future, where do you think it would lead?  It is very important to be able to answer these questions at some point in your life. The earlier you do so, the better and you have to work hard to continue to keep your vision alive.

What is vision?

By vision I mean the ability to see where you are heading! It is the ability to see where your present action will lead you. Wise people are people of clear vision. To be wise is to know what results you want in your life and to be willing and aware of some of the actions that you must take to bring you to the envisioned destination. Vision is different from dreams in that you have gone beyond wishing to personalizing and appropriating what you see. Vision is a dream that has become so real to you, that it is influencing all the decisions you make today!

How can you see and have no vision!

It means you can see your present needs, the world around you, the challenges that you face but you are unable to see or envision  how you would want tomorrow to be. The truth is that none of us can predict tomorrow, but I believe that God has made it possible for us to imagine and envision the future so that it can inspire us to action! To wake up everyday at a job you don’t like and have no plans for change is seeing without having a vision. What you want to do is determine to find out what you are uniquely designed to contribute to this world and work hard at it with the help of God until your take your last breath. There is so much joy and peace in doing what comes naturally to you and being paid to do it.

All successful people are big dreamers – Brian Tracy

dreamers

If you can dream, you can be successful. Every child I know can dream! We were all designed by God to shine, to display our gifting and to compliment one other. I have been reading about successful bloggers and I have visited many blogs lately. One thing that stands out to me is that the successful and popular blogs have a very clear message! You know exactly what they are about and they work consistently on it.

What is your blog about? What are you working consistently on? It made me ask myself what my dream or vision for this blog is. Really what is the problem that this blog is solving? Or better still, what do I want it to solve?

This is what I want this blog to do

To help a person who is just going through the motions of everyday life, to change into a person who is living a very fruitful, joyful and prosperous life (a maximized life). My tool for this is wisdom, which is applied knowledge. One of the methods is Webinars. Signup for the next one. Another method is to drop short words of wisdom regularly to inspire and encourage!

Turn your Dreams to Reality

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them. ~Henry David Thoreau

The words of wisdom here is that dreams should not be discarded! They should be acted upon. It’s true that many of us have had great ideas pass through our minds and we have discarded them. Sometimes we see other people act on our ideas and make something out of what we ignored. I believe that everyone is equipped with the ability to imagine because it is a necessary tool for growth and success in life. I enjoy watching my boys play around the home. Those boys have an amazing amount of imagination. You can easily hear the older one say, you can’t come in here if you don’t give me $10. The little one will immediately put out an imaginary $10 dollars and the response will be “no, that’s just one dollar, you need to give me 9 more!” to which the younger would respond as he wishes.

Dare to dream!

I know that as we grow older, our experiences, the people around us and the mistakes that we have made, tend to stifle our willingness to dream! I would like to use this medium today to encourage you to revisit some of your buried dreams! See the one you can refresh or rework! These are the things that make life full of joy! Don’t trash your dreams! Put the foundations under them!

Reprove a wise person and he will love you.

Do not reprove a mocker or he will hate you;
reprove a wise person and he will love you. – Prov 9:8 (NET)

I’m amazed at how little tolerance many people have for being corrected today! Not that I go around reproving or correcting people, but I get so many complaints about how unhappy people are for being corrected by parents, managers, supervisors, friends and family! I see people who want to dance only to their own music, people who do not present a teachable spirit! Once in a while I meet others who are so happy to get inputs from others, they are not trying to teach you all the time and they seem to have so much more going for them!

A wise person appreciates being reproved because it make you wiser! You learn what you are doing wrong, you also learn how other people perceive what you are doing! You learn how proud you are if you are offended by a simple reprove or correction. In all you are the better of for a honest reprove!

What about Negative Criticisms?

Although negative criticisms hurt and they are usually aimed at tearing you down, it can help you if you are wise! What people do to us is not what causes the problem, it is how we respond to what they say or do that causes the problem. I have had a few negative criticisms in my life and have some really critical people around me. I have found however that some of these extremely critical people have made me to bring my game to a higher quality! Now you don’t want ultra-critical people around you all the time, but I must say they are a blessing from time to time!

Do you realize that no matter how much you know, there are still so many people who know more than you? There are things you cannot see because they are not within your horizon! The more wisdom you have, the more you realize how little you know. If you are aware of this truth, you desire to learn from every situation. Regardless of how the message is packaged, it is always to your advantage to take the message and discard the packaging!

Wisdom Action

Check how willing you are to get corrected! Do you have people around you who can reprove you? If you don’t, begin to look for some and give them the permission to reprove you! Make sure though that these are people who love you and have your best interest at heart. People whom you respect and look up to. For example there are many people who have been blogging for so many more year than I have been. I will be happy to have them correct me on some of the things they may see on my site!
