What sin did you commit to deserve a stroke?

I have sensed a good number of people kind of suggest this question to me a few times! A doctor at the hospital in Abuja actually asked a similar question and other similar ones. He was not trying to be mean. He was just being “thorough”.

The question that flashed across my mind in the early morning of Saturday April 8 when my symptoms were still getting worse is this : Lord have mercy on me! Is there anything I have done to open myself to this? Am I doing all that God asked me to do?

So I asked for mercy a lot! I still ask for mercy! I’m not foolish enough to think that I have walked perfectly before God. I don’t think that if God should grade my walk with Him using His standard that I would get pass mark. I know that as it lies within my power, I do not know any blatant disobedience. I also know the blood of Jesus cleanses me from all my sins! So I know that this stroke is not as a result of sin.

“And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.”‭‭John‬ ‭9:2-3‬ ‭KJV‬

It is not an easy place to be when people are “kind of” asking you what kind of sin you sinned?

After I has settled in my heart that this was not as a result of personal sin, I was able to just ignore the question. At first, the question made me sad. I wondered why this was happening to me. All this wondering happened within a few hours on Saturday!

This “silent” question has been and I think will be a constant part of this experience! I remember telling my wife that since my Father God has allowed this to happen, everything that comes with it was permitted by Him. Instead of getting offended by the questions we should take them all in and respond to those who are bold enough to ask out loud!

Let’s get this right! We don’t have to sin to deserve any type of illness or medical challenge! It is true that sin opens the door of our lives for the enemy to afflict us. We must not think however that the magnitude of the sin will determined the magnitude of the affliction! Without God’s mercy we already “deserve” all manner of sicknesses, diseases and afflictions! It is the mercy of God that keeps us from them!

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4:16‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

We all need to go to the throne of grace. Notice what we get first from the throne of grace is MERCY! Then Grace!

I have been receiving mercy and grace this past 6 weeks! Glory be to God!

If you are reading this and you are wondering if God is punishing you as a result of your sin, please stop!

God is not punishing you! He has allowed it to build your faith. To teach you how to receive healing, to teach you how to care for your body, to teach you more about the struggles of the people around you and so much more! Most importantly to teach you God’s love – He is with you and with Him nothing is impossible.

Remember once more that you are not healthy because you have not sinned! You are healthy by the mercy and grace of God!

I thank God our Father God does not punish us with sickness! And when our lack of faith leads us to some affliction, he stays with us through it all.

Thank you Jesus.
